More Zion

I'm a bit behind but I'll try to sum up the past few days
Thursday I hiked up the Narrows
which is the beautiful narrow canyon from which the Virgin river descends
It's hard to describe the beauty
but the pictures on the website will help a bit.

Coming from the prairie it was hard to believe that sandstone could come in such shapes
and that water could make such an amazing landscape
Sculpted, the only word to describe the walls.
Incredibly in this desert environment,
water fills the porous sandstone,
seeping deep down into the rock
and then dripping out when it meets a harder layer of sedimentary rock
this creates the lush environment at the bottom of the deep narrow canyons
with ferns, moss and other water lovign plants thriving while 1000 feet above the
landscape is scrub brush and cactus

I hiked for four hours up the Narrows,
Meeting Doug and Eric from Michigan
with whom I hiked intermittently the entire time

Wow, Jeff.
Thanks for this ...
the poetry
the wonder

I heard on CBC radio this morning
that the poet's job
is to hold up a frame to reality
and say, "This could be poetry."
It's a certain way of
perceiving the world
and describing it,
not merely to understand
but for others to
share the experience.

I'm glad
to share your travels if only
from an armchair perspective.

Looking forward to "joining"
Tom & Lori & the kids.
:)
